Trauma therapy, BRAINSPOTTING

Trauma can happen to us, but it can also happen around us and still profoundly affect our lives. Major trauma (like witnessing crime or the death of a loved one) to every day trauma (being barraged by negative talk in the news, social media, and those around us) can manifest into judgment, negative self-talk, anxiety, depression, and negative behavior. Since we store traumas in emotional and body based parts of the brain that are rarely accessed by talking alone. Brainspotting (BSP) can help process trauma on a sub-cortical level, where the trauma is stored. Trauma can manifest in many different symptoms, such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, phobias, low self esteem, sexual problems, and problems with relationships. For more information on BSP, please visit www.brainspotting.com. BSP was found to be the most effective mode of therapy used with the survivors in the Newtown-Sandy Hook December 14, 2012 school shooting.

grief and loss counseling and anticipatory grief and loss

There are numerous losses we can experience.  Death of a loved one is what most people think of when we think of grief and loss.  But there are other losses in life as well, such as breakups, divorces, anticipatory grief, transition into adulthood, "empty-nesting," loss of mobility due to injury, or loss of anticipated future.  Grief and Loss Counseling helps people integrate their loss while finding hope and joy in living.

If constant concerns, worries, and anxieties are affecting you prior to someone passing away, support is also provided during these challenging time to process, gain validation, strength, and understanding, to decrease anxiety, and to provide a plan for self-care.

LOSS OF HEALTH DUE TO Cancer or other serious diagnoses

A serious medical diagnosis, such as cancer, can turn a person's world upside down.  When one person is diagnosed, it affects not only the person diagnosed, but also everyone in the immediate and extended family.  Weather you or someone you know has been diagnosed with a serious illness, counseling may help improve communication, build internal and external resources, and tolerate any treatment side-effects.  Sometimes it is challenging to know how to ask for help, and family members may not know what to do or say.  Working together can open the space for greater communication, sharing, and understanding.  This process can increase strength, support, validation, and empowerment.

art therapy

Art Therapy is a holistic approach working similarly yet differently to talk therapy.  When we speak, we access only the left hemisphere of our brain.  Recent research shows that traumatic and stressful memories are stored in the right hemisphere of the brain.  Evidence shows that art-making with intention and professional therapeutic direction engages both the left and right hemispheres of the brain, allowing an avenue to access feelings otherwise not possible in talk therapy alone.  Through Art Therapy, clients can express themselves in different ways, process powerful emotions in a unique and safe manner, learn more about themselves, and discover new tools to increase resilience.   Art Therapy has proven beneficial in working with anxiety, depression, cancer treatment, trauma, chronic pain, and grief.   Working with Art Therapy requires no artistic experience or skill.

couples and relationships

Do you have the relationship you want?  Couple and relationship counseling helps couples understand issues that may be getting in their way.  The process strengthens relationships, improves communication, and allows couples to better understand one another.  Developing these skills helps couples to better envision future possibilities.

Self-Improvement

When you are wanting to strengthen yourself, develop more confidence, feel better about yourself, become the authentic you.  Counseling for self improvement is a way to strengthen your inner being, feel more comfortable and confident, increase self-esteem, and access more of what you desire.  Self improvement can include physical, mental, emotional, social and/or spiritual aspects.
